The music of Africa Brass is an impressive, globally-inspired musical celebration that stirs the soul, as much as it does the intellect. To envision the sound of Africa Brass you only have to close your eyes and imagine the sound of West African drumming, connecting with American Jazz, and ultimately falling in love with New Orleans Brass.
This cultural blending of musical genres embodies a unique sound that bridges the music of two continents and eight centuries. From West Africa to North America, jazz ensembles have a long history from which to draw inspiration, and Africa Brass represents one of the most innovative manifestations of this marriage of Brass and Drums.
Based in New Orleans, but consisting of musicians from all over the globe, this seven-member ensemble is made up of dedicated artists as eclectic as their sound. Africa Brass is led by master percussionist Thierno Dioubate of Guinea, West Africa, joined by the ensemble of Tim Green-sax, Matt Perrine -sousaphone, Byron Asher-clarinet ,Charles Joseph-trombone, Jeff “ P’frog” Klein- African drums/percussion, and featuring Michaela Harrison-vocals.
A Griot of the Malinke people, master percussionist Dioubate embodies the musical ensemble’s connection to eight centuries of West African culture. Griots have many roles in their culture including storyteller, praise singer, poet and musician who continue the oral history of their people from century to century. It’s also no coincidence that the ensemble’s name pays homage to the 1961 John Coltrane studio sessions Africa/Brass, which was Coltrane’s groundbreaking exploration of jazz intermixed with global rhythms.
Each performance of Africa Brass serves as a vehicle for this centuries- etched form of musical expression, and no two shows are ever the same. When you hear Africa Brass you not only feel the music, you feel your culture.
